Harvey Weinstein Faces a New Legal Battle: Retrial Looms After Conviction Reversal

Harvey Weinstein appeared in court for the first time on Wednesday after the reversal of his conviction in New York; he still has many more court appearances. According to NBC News, prosecutors have indicated that they want to retry Weinstein this autumn. To Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Curtis Farber, assistant district attorney Nicole Blumberg said, "We think early fall date, possibly as early as September for a trial." The court said that he would schedule a discovery hearing on May 29 and set a trial date for after Labor Day. According to Fox News, defense attorneys had fought against the decision to remand Weinstein into jail, citing health concerns.

2020 saw Weinstein's rape and sexual assault conviction and 23-year sentence. Blumberg said, "We will be retrying this case because we believe in it." She said that there was "nothing consensual" about his behavior, in spite of what the defense claimed. According to the AP, Blumberg said that Jessica Mann, one of the accusers, is willing to testify once again. On Wednesday, Mann appeared in court. The second woman's attorney, Gloria Allred, said that her client, Mimi Haley, was traumatized by her 2020 testimony and is unsure whether she would testify again. In hospital on Friday for testing was Weinstein, 72. On Wednesday, after the hearing, he was returned to the hospital.
