President Obama recorded a video message to his supporters discussing the Affordable Care Act where he once again stated that he is determined to make healthcare a “right.”
“I’m absolutely confident that we will finish the job of making health care in this country not just a privilege for the fortunate few, but a right for all Americans to enjoy,”
The idea that healthcare is a “right” is absolutely wrong. The idea that a “right” to healthcare, or to any service for that matter, can be created through the efforts of the president himself or through congress by the passage of bad legislation is wrong.
The fact is, healthcare is a service. The act of providing healthcare to someone is a job that a person chooses to do. By calling healthcare a “right” the President is basically telling doctors and nurses and emts and all people in the medical profession that their time, their labor, talent, etc belongs not to themselves, but to everyone and that we are all entitled to their services. That’s just absurd!
Rights are determined on an individual basis and are not dependent upon the existence of government or businesses or any type of structure. We are born with our rights in tact. Some people refer to them as “God given” or “natural” rights which means that our rights are an element of humanity and not some construct of government.
Our Constitutional scholar in the White House should well understand that the Constitution protects individual unalienable rights. He should know that no where in that document does it allude to government creating rights or the concept of being born with a right to healthcare. And it sure as heck doesn’t say anything about anyone’s right to healthcare costing less than a cell phone bill, as the President likes to say.
