Paul Gordon Collier- President Obama dropped an Orwellian word bomb today at a Georgetown Speech. It is ironic he was there to participate in a 3-day summit about the ‘moral, human and economic costs of poverty in the nation (from the Georgetown website). Now here’s where the Orwellian mind bomb comes in, and I’ll let the great champion of the poor speak for himself:
I have to say that if you watch Fox News on a regular basis, it is a constant venue. They will find folks who make me mad. I don’t know where they find them. They’re all like, “I don’t want to work. I just want a free Obama Phone, or whatever.”…..
….we’re going to have to change how our body politic thinks, which means we’re going to have to change how the media reports on these issues, and how people’s impressions of what it’s like to struggle in this economy looks like….
Now, instead of a game of Where’s Waldo, let me ask you, where’s the Orwellian word bomb? If you said ‘all of it’, well, I’d have to give you partial credit. You win an Obama Phone. It’s free but you only pay $500 a month. Look harder if you didn’t find it.
For those of you who did get it, congratulations, you get free healthcare for a year. Only you won’t be able to see any doctors because they don’t take the free healthcare card.
The Orwellian word bomb is this- we’re going to have to change how our body politic thinks, which means we’re going to have to change how the media reports on these issues….
Boom! Remember, who is the we in this sentence? Why, it’s the President, the head of state. The state is going to have to change how the media reports. Now remember, this is for the poor and the needy and it’s just about stopping that hate machine, that destroyer of the poor, Fox News, so it’s ok. You see, freedom of the press should not trump freedom of the right of the poor to get Obama phones and free healthcare.
