In his re-election bid, McConnell is fending off a challenge from tea party candidate Matt Bevin, a Louisville businessman, in the Kentucky Republican Senate primary.
Tea party groups were upset with the results of the government shutdown and debt-limit agreements. McConnell played a significant leadership role to reopen the government and ensure that the U.S. did not default. The Senate Conservative Fund announced Friday it will support Bevin.
Appearing on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace, Florida’s Republican senator said, “I think [McConnell] is trying to lead our conference. It’s a diverse conference with a lot of different opinions, and that’s a tough job to begin with, and then of course he’s got to represent his own state.”
Sen. Marco Rubio affirmed his support Sunday for GOP Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who is facing a tea party primary challenge in his home state of Kentucky.
