Oh, it’s on and KY Senator Rand Paul, whose presidential campaign has struggled to gain traction decided to turn the tables and jumpstart his sagging campaign. He’s relishing the role of attack-dog status from the Thursday night debate decided to go after GOP front-runner Donald Trump before it gets too late.
On Monday, Paul released a three-page statement blasting Trump as a “fake conservative.” These are strong words and they will hit a nerve either way. It could lift Paul up or drag him down. We’re not sure of his tactics but if he thinks this will work, he has to give it a shot.
The Louisville Courier-Journal gave these highlights of the paper:
“This is a guy who said in 1999 that he was a strong supporter of the United Nations. He was for partial birth abortion before he was against it. He lavished praise on the bank bailouts,” Paul said in the statement. “He was for Obamacare before he was against it and has said he’s ‘liberal on health care.’”
Paul said that instead of advancing anti-Washington policies, Trump’s comments are “all blather, non-sequitur, and self-aggrandizing bombast.”
Paul said, “What do you do to a bully? You stand up to him. That’s what I did on the debate stage and I was the only one.”
If you remember during Thursday’s presidential debate, Paul challenged Trump before Fox News was in the driver’s seat. He took on Trump when the businessmen refused to rule out an independent bid for the White House if he loses the GOP nomination.
“He’s already hedging his bet on the Clintons, OK? So if he doesn’t run as a Republican, maybe he supports (Hillary) Clinton, or maybe he runs as an independent,” Paul said. “But I’d say that he’s already hedging his bets because he’s used to buying politicians.”
He later jumped in to attack Trump for supporting a single-payer health care plan, but for many that watch…we remember him barking, but the reasons have escaped many.
