BEHNA: 3 Reasons Why Donald Trump Is Not My First Choice For President

We know Donald Trump is not part of the GOP establishment. He is unorthodox and politically incorrect, which I love, but there are concerns I have that are still looming.

1) Past Political Views

We know by now that Donald Trump was no conservative, especially looking at his past positions. Yes, it is true that people convert and can change, but the question is if that is the case for Donald Trump. Has he really evolved on his issues, or is he just flip flopping? His response in the Republican debate on the question of universal healthcare posed a red flag to me. Instead of fully condemning his past view and blasting universal healthcare, he mentioned how it worked in some countries like Canada and Australia. I do hope Trump has genuinely converted on his views, and time will tell to see if that’s the case.

2) Taking Away Ted Cruz Votes

One of the reasons Ted Cruz is my choice for president is because he is the most conservative candidate. He is the tea party favorite that represents the anti-establishment, often using the term “Washington Cartels” to describe the broken system in Washington. Because of this, I believe Cruz is being affected the most with Trump running, because they both are bold and aren’t afraid to stand up for what they believe in. So I’d rather vote for a consistent conservative like Cruz than a conservative who has a very questionable past.

3) Free-Speech Controversy

Trump criticized Pamela Geller over the Garland, TX free speech event back in May.

This isn’t just one issue, but we’re talking about free speech in the First Amendment. He got some heat from some conservatives, including Katie Pavlich.

Now I will definitely vote for Donald Trump if he wins the primary. However, at this point, we have Ted Cruz running too, and when there are two conservatives running, I prefer the conservative that has been more consistent about their views.

My points are not to bash Trump, but rather to raise concerns I have with him. The campaigns are kicking off, and there will be plenty of time to see who finishes on top.
