BEHNA: INSANITY! Illinois Has Gone Nearly 1 Year With No State Budget

In Illinois, the fiscal year begins July 1st and ends June 30th. Here is one date you must remember: July 1, 2015. That is the first day the state has gone without a budget and hasn’t had one ever since.

Lawmakers have until the end of May to come up with a budget because they are scheduled to adjourn May 31st. If there is still no budget, they may have to meet over the Summer again.

But who is to blame for the budget impasse? House Speaker Michael Madigan gets most of the blame, if not all of it.

Last year, the Democrats passed a budget that would overspend by $4 billion. This time around, the budget Madigan proposed in the House is even worse, which would overspend by $7 billion dollars!

The Democrats are playing more games, while millions of Illinois residents are hurting by the budget impasse. Governor Rauner has pledged he would not sign any unbalanced budget, and if they knew he would veto last year’s budget, they certainly know he will veto this one too.

I’m not optimistic about the Illinois General Assembly passing a balanced budget in the next few days, and if this budget impasse isn’t settled this year, I don’t know when we ever will.

The citizens of Illinois deserve so much better than this. It isn’t fair for all of us to be suffering while the Democrat leaders continue to make a game out of this. Years have passed since Illinois passed a balanced budget, and the sad part is that it does not have to be this way. Due to the state’s geographical location, we should be having some of the best agriculture and best jobs in the nation. Yet with the out of control taxation and spending, we have faced for years, Illinois currently has one of the worst fiscal records.

So when will Madigan and his allies stop playing games and get serious about supporting a balanced budget? Time is running out, and as each week passes, more people are hurting and the consequences of no budget continue to intensify. Enough is enough!
