Common Core’s Deliberate Misunderstanding of 2nd Amendment

amendmentsCommon Core has come under a great deal of fire for the materials that are often used within the program. Because of some of these materials, it is also very easy to see why conservatives are not only uneasy about Common Core, but are working to stop it. The fault lies with Common Core itself.

First, let’s take a look at the exact wording of the 2nd Amendment in the U.S. Constitution.

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

The further we move away from the period of our founding fathers, the more difficulty some seem to have in understanding the actual meaning of the 2nd Amendment. Some of the textbooks being used under Common Core seem to have no problem completely redefining it.

As can be seen in the image to the right, a copy of a page of one of the texts used for Common Core is shown. What the authors have essentially done is combined the 2nd and 3rd amendments, but they’ve also changed the meaning of the 2nd. Note they state the 2nd Amendment “grants citizens the right to bear arms as members of militia of citizen soldiers…” This, in point of fact, is not what the 2nd Amendment states. It says that it is the right of the people to keep and bear arms and shall not be infringed. The reason? In case – for the security of a free state – a state milita is needed.

Why would a state militia be needed? It would be needed when the federal government oversteps its boundaries as has become the norm for today. The federal government was put in place as a means of support for the individual states. Unfortunately, over time, the federal government has grown larger and larger and begun to wield more power against the states, forcing or coercing the states to do what the federal government wants done.

The way many authors whose texts are used in Common Core see it, the only time a person should have a gun is when they are actually part of a citizen militia group. This is simply not true.

2nd-amendment-assignmentAnother text provides this definition of the 2nd Amendment. “This amendment states that people have the right to certain weapons, providing that they register them and they have not been in prison. The founding fathers included this amendment to prevent the United States from acting like the British who had tried to take weapons away from the colonists.”

The actual 2nd Amendment does not define the type of weapon that can be owned, nor does the amendment say anything about registering weapons or whether or not a person has a criminal record. In fact, the amendment – as noted – states clearly that it shall not be infringed. It doesn’t say “may” not or “should” not be infringed. It says “shall” not be infringed.

All of these erroneous definitions exist because of the effort by law-makers and others to redefine the amendment by brainwashing people. They want young people to grow up to take their word for it, not to read the actual document themselves. They want them to become adults parroting the lies that these authors espouse in their books.

Politicians, leftists, socialist, communists, and others are doing all they can to eradicate the truth of the 2nd Amendment. They desperately need it changed so that when the government comes for our guns – as they have been doing in New York State, California, and elsewhere – we will have nothing left to resist the federal government’s tyranny.

This should alarm people, yet too many seem unconcerned. They see guns as the problem, instead of the individual. No amount of anti-gun laws will remove guns from criminals. The only hope that law-makers have it to make it more difficult for law-abiding citizens to own guns because they want us to believe that criminals obtain their weapons through theft of homes. In reality, guns stolen from homes is a very small percentage. Most guns are illegal purchased on the street because the amount of guns that come to the black market in America through Mexico is manifold.

Our government has not been able to win the alleged war on drugs. This same government lost big time when alcohol was outlawed during Prohibition. The government simply cannot manage these “wars” on issues. Though the rhetoric is thick about eliminating gun violence, the truth is that only when ALL guns are removed from society will gun violence decrease. Of course, the left does not even want to talk about how many lives are saved by law-abiding people using a gun against the criminal.

But the left has always been disingenuous. They say they are so concerned about gun violence, yet they continue to encourage abortions on demand, which ends every unborn child’s life and too often, kills the mother as well. They ignore these facts because their agenda is really to eliminate everything that is traditional in America, including the U.S. Constitution.

If you are not willing to fight for the rights you have that are guaranteed under the Constitution, then you simply don’t deserve to have them.
