New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is not guilty. That’s right. Not guilty. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: he did not perpetrate this otherwise utterly childish stunt – aka Bridgegate – on the people of Fort Lee and I’m about to tell you why.
Yes, I am a New Jersey resident *sigh*, but, no, I am NOT a Chris Christie supporter. In fact, I did not vote for him in the last election after he snubbed Rand Paul’s offer to kiss and make up. Heck, he had it in the bag anyway, so who was I kidding? It’s just that the party is more important than Christie’s – or anyone else’s – political campaign. And that was enough for me. I am also an ardent defender of justice. Not the kind the left purports to administer, but the real kind. Every man shall have his day to be heard, to demonstrate his righteousness ahead of speculative conviction, or in this case, ahead of being thrown to the wolves by a bunch of crazed liberals and overzealous conservatives. You might not be a fan of this man we conservatives call a RINO, but what’s fair is fair and unless and until there is iron clad proof of his guilt, this whole controversy is for naught.
That said, let’s look at cause and effect.
The very first thing one must ask himself is why the whole country even knows about this, why this otherwise insignificant-in-the-scheme-of-things occurrence has mushroomed into an all-out media blitz. Because a politician abused his power? Oh my. Perish the thought. No! Of course not. If such a firestorm was a normal reaction to politicians overstepping their bounds, there’d not be air time for much else. So why now? Why Chris Christie? One word. Hillary. That’s why. There was no way on God’s green earth that the left was going to allow Christie – or any other prospective candidate for that matter – to get in Hillary’s way – not even three years out. Does Herman Cain ring a bell? Do you recall what happened to him in the 2012 primary? He was crucified! For being a few points ahead of the pack! He was pushed to the edge of the cliff, and soon as he jumped…crickets. Not a shred of credible evidence ever surfaced. Hmmm.
Second, why would someone as savvy as Christie (like him or not, he is a savvy guy) pull such a juvenile stunt and risk the Republican nomination? I mean, really? Perhaps there is more to this whole thing than we know, something so egregious, so sinister, that it would drive a man on the fast track to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave to zing a mayor he never met whose support he never asked for. Sorry, I just don’t buy it.
Third, there is nothing, no evidence whatsoever, not a scintilla, supporting the assertion that Chris Christie had a hand in this idiotic ‘prank’. Everyone is so anxious to shoot this guy down that they jumped for joy when finally, last week, the media reported that he “knew” about the lane closing. Well, yes, he did know! Just like everyone else! Listen people, the real question that needs to be answered is whether he orchestrated the lane closing as a retaliatory scheme, not whether he knew about it when it was happening. David Wildstein is playing a game that all these clowns play when caught with their pants down. He’s proffering for immunity. He makes like he has some explosive piece of evidence, gets immunity, and then comes out with a tidbit that doesn’t prove a thing. It’s all a game. A big shameful game.
I conclude, in light of the foregoing, that this whole Chris Christie Bridgegate controversy is nothing but a ploy. Part distraction from the country’s real problems and part watching the Right eat its own. It’s a delightful 2-for-the-price-of-one for the left who gets to sit back and watch the GOP implode at the same time it deflects from the failings of its illustrious leader. So, don’t be fooled. Don’t fall prey to this trickery. Like Christie, hate Christie. It matters not. See this circus for what it really is.
Oh, and about the fat reference…sorry, Mr. Governor, the alliteration was too good to pass up. And besides, I backed you up on this one…let’s call it even!
