A female police officer was thrown over a guardrail following an assault near the top of the Blue Mountain in West Penn Township.

According to West Penn Township Police Chief Brian Johnson, Officer Melissa Ruch stopped on Route 309 where there was a disabled vehicle at the guardrail.

A male near the car picked up Ruch and threw her down an embankment, the report says. She was rescued thanks to an alert tone from her communications equipment, and flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, according to the report.

The officer was reportedly able to use her stun gun on her assailant.
