In a softly announced change of policy, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) via the Federal Employees Heath Benefits Program (FEHB), now allows federal health insurance contractors to provide coverage for gender reassignment surgery and associated post-op expenditures such as hormone therapy. The change comes shortly after Medicare lifted its prohibition of transformative healthcare at the end of last month.
Neither measure actively provides coverage to federal employees or to Medicare recipients. Rather, both programs had previously excluded reassignment and hormone replacement procedures. Now, providing for coverage of them is at the discretion of the insurance provider.
