Grassroots Reaction To 2014 Values Voters Summit Presidential Straw Poll

The Values Voter Summit for 2014 just wrapped up in Washington, where passionate and unwavering conservatives filled the Omni Shoreham Hotel. The energy and excitement were palpable. An amazingly diverse group of powerhouse conservatives, including Glenn Beck, Mark Levin, Sarah Palin, Star Parker, the Benham brothers, the Duggars, and Bobby Jindal gave some awe-inspiring speeches. Sprinkle in a handful of “I don’t know if I’m running for president”-type politicians like Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Mike Huckabee, and Rick Santorum, and it was a dream weekend for your average Right-Wing Nut Job like myself.

A straw poll proved Ted Cruz to be the values voters’ first choice for president. Senator Cruz received a whopping 25% of the vote. Doctor Ben Carson came in at second with 20%, followed by Huckabee with 12% and Santorum with 10%. Bobby Jindal and Rand Paul both came in at 7%, from this largely Christian group of voters. Marco Rubio, Rick Perry, Mitt Romney, and Scott Walker finished up the top ten.

The favorites for vice presidential candidates were pretty similar; with many swapping Cruz for Carson. Dr. Carson dominated this poll with 22% and Cruz came in second with 14%. Jindal carried 11% in this poll, Michelle Bachmann garnered 10%, and Santorum rounded out the top five with 9% of the vote. The remaining candidates, finishing in the top ten, were Rand Paul, Huckabee, Rubio, Paul Ryan, and Scott Walker.

It is important to note that Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden both finished with 1% of the vote for favorite presidential candidate, leading some to believe that a sneaky prankster was secretly spiking the punchbowl.

Some results fall in line with the Republican Party, others make it seem like these values voters are being left behind. While this group is a large block for the right, some of these issues can be supported without being a centerpiece of the platform. What makes conservatives great is that many ideals from fiscal conservatives and social conservatives overlap and we can all find common ground to rally around candidates.
