McCain: If Last Night’s Debate Were a Fight, ‘They Would Have Stopped It’

“If it were a fight, they would have stopped it,” said Senator John McCain of the first presidential debate, telling Fox and Friends that Americans got to see the real Mitt Romney last night, “as opposed to the hundreds of millions of attack ads.”

McCain also outlined the thematic differences of the debate compared to when he faced off against Obama four years ago. “It was all about hope and change,” explained McCain. “Now it’s about choice. And what Mitt Romney did was he clearly gave people a choice.”

Senator McCain then criticized the president’s lackluster response to a question about working across party lines, but praised Mitt Romney’s attitude on the same subject. “He’ll sit down and talk to anybody, but he’ll act on principle,” McCain noted, expressing his belief that Obama hasn’t done the same. “This president, with overwhelming majorities in both houses of Congress for two years, gave us a disastrous result,” said McCain, citing Obamacare, his stimulus package and the Dodd-Frank Act.

But McCain did issue the following warning for the next debate: “Do not underestimate President Obama. The guy is good, he’s smart, he gives a great speech — (The) next debate is going to be very important, and I guarantee you, you’re going to see a better performance. “But I also think you may see a better performance out of Mitt,” he quickly added. “Even better than the one he just gave.”
