As of January 12, NBC managed to set the clock back on race relations and spit in the face of those who struggled to integrate our society and unite us as Americans instead of separating us by race. NBC has now launched NBCBLK, a branch of the NBC news network that is totally devoted to “African-American” news and “African-American” issues.
According to the mission statement posted on their Facebook page:
NBCBLK is an inclusive space for stories about politics, culture and social issues. Our aim is to inspire greater conversation around black identity and culture in America today. We will be sharing positive stories about what is happening in black communities, and reporting on challenging issues that these communities face. We will also be curating and passing on great content from around NBC News – NBC Nightly News, the Today Show, Dateline, local affiliates among other NBC outlets.
We welcome your ideas, your feedback, your perspective.
We do NOT welcome inappropriate language, offensive photos, divisive arguments. These posts will be blocked and these users will be reported to Facebook for harassment.
Are they trying to insinuate that other news outlets are NOT inclusive of stories about African-Americans in politics, culture and social issues? Is this “greater conversation” they are so eagerly trying to inspire going to take place only if there are no “divisive” comments? Furthermore, will there now be a “Caucasian” or “White” NBC….maybe a “Bi-Racial” NBC?
I have heard stories from the older generation about separate seating areas, separate water fountains, separate schools. Our kids don’t know what that type of separation looks like. They are busy playing together at recess and hanging out on the weekends. The election of the first African-American (or Bi-Racial) President was supposed to set a precedent and further close the gap and unite us as AMERICANS, but we are not moving forward….we are moving backwards.
This move by a National Media Outlet is deplorable and speaks volumes about where we are as a nation. News can not and should not be categorized and delivered based on the skin-color of the audience. Unfortunately, according to their Mission Statement it seems they are not interested in opinions to the contrary.
