The Islamic State, or ISIS, has threatened the life of Peter Kassig, 26, who converted to Islam after his capture. Just as in the case of murdered American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, the Kassig family has lamented that the government is nowhere to be found.
In a series of Tweets, the Kassig family has appealed directly to ISIS leadership. The message is always the same:
I am trying to get in touch with the Islamic State about my son’s fate. I am an old woman, and Abdul-Rahman is my only child. My husband and I are on our own, with no help from the government. We would like to talk to you. How can we reach you?
Some of the responses to her plea by Islamic State sympathizers are disturbing, to say the least. Many others, including Muslims, are supportive of the Kassig family’s effort. Mrs. Kassig has repeatedly asked for prayers, at one point tweeting that she “would like to ask for everyone who hears or sees my words to pray for his safe return at sunset each day.”
Peter Kassig was captured on October 1, 2013 in eastern Syria, where he was working to help refugees, as reported at CNN. He was a founder of SERA (Special Emergency Response and Assistance).
In 2013, Time reported,
With just over $2,000 raised from donations, SERA set out to supply Syrian refugees in the north of the country with blankets.
ISIS victim, journalist James Foley’s mother Diane told CNN’s Anderson Cooper during an interview that her family felt as though they were an “annoyance” in their efforts to rescue James from captivity and that they were told “many times” that they could be “prosecuted” for attempting to raise money for the requested ransom.
A spokesperson for the family of ISIS victim Steven Sotloff, Barak Barfi said that the Sotloffs “received a cold shoulder from the White House after Steven’s capture in 2013” and further “alleged that a representative of the National Security Council had ‘bullied and hectored’ the Sotloffs in a meeting,” as reported at the Huffington Post. “We never really believed that the administration was doing anything to help us,” Barfi said.
ISIS radicals, who also murdered Britons Alan Henning and David Haines, do not fear the Obama Administration. The most recent video featured the decapitation of Henning, and paraded Kassig at the end of their propaganda video on October 3.
If Peter Kassig was your child, would you trust the federal government? What would you do?
