Florida authorities say a police officer was shot and killed in Tarpon Springs early Sunday.
The shooting happened at 3 a.m. at or near 199 Grand Boulevard, a few blocks from the city’s Sponge Docks. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office and Tarpon Springs Police Department are investigating.
Authorities haven’t said whether there are any other injuries or identified the officer or suspect. Bay News 9 has learned that the officer and the suspect are both male.
The officer is only the fourth killed in the line of duty in Tarpon Springs Police Department history. The last was Lanny Langford, who died in a crash on Nov. 18, 1969.
Before that, Everett Blewfield was killed by gunfire in 1926 and Marshal Rueben Jones was killed by gunfire in 1921.
No other information has been released. Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri and Tarpon Springs Police Chief Robert Kochen are expected to provide more details at a news conference this afternoon. Bay News 9 will carry the news conference live.
