Rubio, Paul and Cruz travel back to DC to vote to tighten restrictions on Syrian Refugees; Senate Democrats block bill

I doubt that either party has a clear idea of the implications of the refugee situation and the laws governing it.

We’re so polarized that the contents of a bill hardly matter anymore. If the GOP wants it, the Dems are against it, and vice versa.

The current arrangement is a reasonable compromise. We’re not allowing as many refugees in as some other countries — just enough to say we’re accepting some. After all, they ARE suffering, and it could be argued that it was the US-led “coalition of the willing” that started this turmoil in the Middle East. The Dems would agree.

We probably shouldn’t take more than we are. The Mariel boat people from Cuba were refugees too, and studies have followed their diffusion throughout the US by the rising crime rates. The GOP would agree.

Beyond that, the USA simply can’t serve as a lifeboat for the world’s poor and distressed. It sounds inhumane, but the carrying capacity of the country is limited. Both Senators Ted Cruz , Rand Paul and Marco Rubio took a break from their presidential campaigns to return to Washington to vote for the bill.

According to a CNN report:

Senate Democrats blocked consideration of a Republican bill to curb the flow of Syrian and Iraqi refugees into the United States in order to prevent terrorists from slipping in.

In exchange for taking up the bill, Democrats wanted votes on amendments including one that would have forced GOP senators to go on-the-record on Donald Trump’s controversial plan to ban all Muslims from entering the U.S.

The 55 to 43 vote largely split down party lines and fell short of the 60 votes needed for the bill to advance. The result means the refugee bill, which passed the House with broad bipartisan support in November, likely is dead for the year.

President Barack Obama had warned he would veto the bill if it made it to his desk.

Wednesday’s vote had both national security and 2016 campaign ramifications.

The Liberal/Democrats are destroying this country. They will tell you that we must have more and lengthier gun background checks but no additional checks for Syrians even though their own HLS tells them they do have enough information to determine the terror levels of these individuals.
