On Tuesday I was reading an article on Yahoo News about the CBO report that Obamacare will lead to work hour reductions equivalent of 2 million jobs in 2017. As is my habit, I checked the comment section for reader reactions.
I found a post from an angry, distraught, small business owner (Drew) who explained the choices he & his employees were forced to make because of the law. Drew’s detailing of what they were forced to choose between gives us a glimpse of what millions of others around the country are experiencing because of the freedom & job killing law known as the Affordable Care Act. Everyone in America should hear his, and his employees’ plight. Here’s his post verbatim.
I own a small business with 8 employees, not including me. We grossed around $800,000 in 2012 and looks like we will be around $840,000 for 2013. Of that, the business profit (after all expenses, including me being paid my very reasonable salary of $65,000) was about $18,000 in 2012 and appears to be around $25,000 for 2013. I am probably one of the few smaller businesses that offers health insurance to my employees and their families.
My costs under Obamacare went from about $9600 per month to about $17000 per month. Yep, you read that right. Almost doubled starting January 1 this year. Thats an increase of almost $100,000 per year, which I do not have in my budget. I’d lose money. So I let my employees choose their future – Keep coverage as is and they kick in an extra $1000 per month per employee with family coverage; keep coverage for the employee only; cut 3 full-time positions; cut everyones hours to 32 per week and increase contribution from the employee by 25%; or cut healthcare completely and everyone gets a raise of $2 per hour.
All options sucked, but all have about the same result in terms of cost to the business. They voted (all but one) to drop family coverage and keep employee only. It saddens me that it came to this, but my business cannot support such a drastic increase in healthcare costs. The really sad thing is that for the same cost as I was paying last year my employees are going to get less valuable coverage. Their deductibles pretty much doubled from $1200 to $2000. I wish I could do more, but I pay for my own health insurance which went from $105 per month for a high deductible plan to $765 for the same coverage. Absolutely crazy. This was the worst law EVER.
If you don’t want more Americans to go through what Drew & his employees did, share this story far & wide. Maybe it will get the attention of Dem lawmakers, and they will realize the destruction they have wrought on this country, and everyday Americans just trying to get by.
