Adolf Hitler was the NAZI leader of Germany during World War II. More than 70 years ago the United States had to, again, save the world. Hitler was executing millions of people during the Holocaust and was conquering Europe. First with the Sudetenland and Poland, to France and bombing London. Hitler’s only mistake was betraying Russia, and Japan attacking the United States. If it wasn’t for the attacks on Pearl Harbor, the United States may not have entered the war. President Roosevelt wanted to stay out of the conflict and only sold weapons to England. If the United States didn’t enter the war, who knows, Hitler may have conquered all of Europe!
When Hitler first broke the agreements from the Treaty of Versailles by building up his military, not one world power did anything about it. When Hitler sent troops into the Sudetenland and annexed Austria, European nations condemned his actions, but did nothing else.
A few months ago Russian President Vladimir Putin annexed Crimea, a part of Ukraine. Putin sent troops into Ukraine with the excuse of protecting ethnic Russian minorities in the region. President Obama does not want to get involved and won’t even consider the actions an invasion.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Yatseniuk has called this, appropriately, an invasion. President Obama, being “politically correct”, has not called this an invasion. Obama prefers a term like “aggression.” President Obama also won’t recognize ISIS as an Islamist terrorist organization. But political correctness is an argument for another time.
Putin also stated that if he gave the order, his military could capture Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, within two weeks. Why would Russia want to capture the capital? Essentially, taking over Ukraine.
Vladimir Putin was a former KGB Lieutenant Colonel. In the early 1990s, Putin joined President Yeltsin’s administration and quickly moved up the ranks. In 1999, after Yeltsin unexpectedly resigned, Putin became acting President of Russia. Many people thought that the USSR was finished, and pure democracy would rule in Russia. And it did, until Putin came into the picture, rather quickly. Putin’s political party, United Russia, has been the dominant party for years. Putin also created his own shadow branches of government. The legitimate powers of the government became powerless once Putin had his way. Putin also made the national anthem the original anthem from the USSR days.
Putin, because of the Russian constitution, could not run again. His Prime Minister, Dmitry Medvedev, became President. In 2012, they switched roles, again. Vladimir Putin became president. Many opposed the elections; accusing Putin of fixing the elections. Putin heavily increased the military and police, with dramatic reforms. Many consider Russia an authoritarian government today, far from the original democracy created after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
British Prime Minister David Cameron warned the world about appeasing to Putin as England did to Hitler.
“We run the risk of repeating the mistakes made in Munich in ’38.”
Simple, small actions that Putin is taking are not a good sign. He may or may not want to resurrect the USSR. He dismisses the accusation, of course. But Europe not making a move until late with NATO’s help isn’t good, especially when the United States doesn’t get involved either. President Obama threatened Putin but did nothing when Putin didn’t listen. Obama only applied sanctions, which aren’t effective. Putin walked all over Obama. Nobody is intimidated by Obama and the United States anymore. He has made a mockery of us internationally.
Remember in 2012 what President Obama said to Prime Minister Medvedev?
“This is my last election. After my election I will have more flexibility.”
Think about that last quote…
