SUTTON: Hey Trump, Here’s a Crazy Idea

This is a tongue-in-cheek bit of campaign advice for Donald Trump. Not that he needs it. Just a suggestion. It is unbidden and comes at no charge. But if you want to put me on the payroll…

The idea was sorta born out of a few things. A combination of President Bush becoming a war criminal, that time Bruce Willis put a million dollars of his own money on Saddam Hussein’s head, and the first day Ronald Reagan was in office. Make no mistake, this would carry a heckuva price tag. On the other side of the coin, it has the potential to sail him into the White House on a popularity surge that no ad campaign could hope to match. As Trump himself would say, think big.

The four Americans currently held hostage by Iran. Jason Rezaian, Robert Levinson, Saeed Abedini, and Amir Hekmati.

Here are the four U.S. citizens currently captive in Iran. They are being held on varying degrees of trumped-up charges and have been for years now. Hekmeti, a marine, was actually sentenced to death but it was overturned and he’s now in a perpetual limbo awaiting retrial. Obama received some heat for not securing their release as part of his nuclear deal. His frustrated retort was that Iran would’ve leveraged them for all sorts of extra concessions. If Obama and Kerry actually cared, their being sent home but have been the price for us to even sit at the table.

Ayatollah-Ali-KhameneiRegardless of stripe, virtually all Americans don’t want to see other Americans languish in a third world prison on bogus claims. If you find one that doesn’t care about it, just go ahead and sucker-punch them when they’re not paying attention. They deserve it.

So here’s what I suggest (again, tongue-in-cheek) Trump do to capitalize on that. Offer a ridiculous dollar-figure bounty on the heads of Iranian leadership, to stand until the release of our countrymen. The current top three are Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei,  President Hassan Rouhani, and First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri. And if any of the captives are killed as a result, then the bounties double for whoever the present leadership is.

Imagine the position that puts them in. For as long as these Americans languish in our prisons there is a price on the head of anyone who holds our office. If we kill them the priced doubles and becomes tied exclusively to us.

I realize it is a half-baked idea. But I don’t think the concept is without merit. After years of negotiating with whipped cream in a suit it is a hard right cross to the face. Suddenly everyone they surround themselves with is a potential traitor. The trophy they hold over their heads in dealing with America becomes a hot potato.

At the very least for Trump, such a display would dwarf anything a campaign ad could hope to get across. In both the primary and the general election, what could his opponents hope to say against it? “Donald Trump is so serious about having our wrongfully held brethren released he put his own money up to get it done.”

What are your thoughts on the subject? Regardless, it is appalling that these men rot away while our current leadership puts the same amount of effort into securing their release as it does to balancing the budget.
