“Military attacks are no longer a priority now. They realize that military attacks are as dangerous or even more dangerous for the assaulting country as they are for the country attacked”, continued Khamenei standing on a podium amid banners boasting “America cannot do a damn thing”.
Iran’s leader took to the stage on June, 4, 2014, in Tehran to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khamenei, the founder of the Islamic Republic. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei used this occasion to openly mock Obama’s remarks made during his West Point speech a week earlier.
During that speech Obama outlined our foreign policy approach in preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon through diplomacy. The president stated, “for the first time in a decade, we have a very real chance of achieving a breakthrough agreement, one that is more effective and durable than what we could have achieved through the use of force. And throughout these negotiations it has been our willingness to work through multilateral channels that kept the world on our side”.
Nowhere in his speech did Obama make clear an indication that America will not tolerate, nor hesitate, to use her military force in preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. That option was seemingly not on the table.
Six months after the initial “historic agreement” made between Iran and America on November, 24, 2013, that lifted sanctions on Iran while allowing them to continue to enrich uranium, Iran called Obama’s bluff. He never had intentions to use force in preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear power and he never will.
Khamenei not only called out Obama’s bluff with regards to the use of our military force for prevention, but he openly did so while already having received over 4 billion dollars at the six-month mark of the interim agreement.
It is important to note the timing of these remarks by Khamenei by contrasting them with those made by Secretary of State John Kerry back in November when the interim agreement was initially signed.
Kerry stated, “the first six-month phase of the deal would improve the security of U.S. allies in the region while efforts are made to negotiate a more comprehensive agreement”. This was the “first step” that according to Kerry “actually rolls back the [Iranian nuclear] program from where it is today and enlarges the breakout time“.
Our allies in the region today could attest to the fact that they no longer look to the U.S. for support as the security in the region has all but collapsed with the rise of ISIS in Syria and Iraq.
What the Obama adminstration has effectively created with the rise of ISIS is a hardening of Iran’s position. Meaning, Obama gave Iran the power to bring their own concessions to the negotiation table that never even existed a year ago today.
Last week we were made aware of this as it was revealed by Wall Street Journal that Obama has actively engaged in dialogue with Iran in writing a secret letter to Iran’s Khamenei. The letter stressed a “shared interest in fighting ISIS” while nudging Iran’s religious leader closer to “making a nuclear deal”.
The letter also assured Iran that we wouldn’t attack their ally in Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The same Bashar al-Assad that Obama was ready to go to war with last year following the infamous crossing of the “red-line” when Assad used chemical weapons on his own people.
A year later the Obama adminstration has found a way to write this off as well as linking the struggle with ISIS at the expense of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear arms.
As it stands today according to the secret letter, if Iran reaches a comprehensive agreement with America and global powers on Teheran’s nuclear program by the November 24th deadline, then Obama will ally with Iran to fight ISIS. Thus giving Iran more leverage in shaping the agreement regarding their nuclear program.
Just because the enemy of my enemy has a shared interest it doesn’t change the fact that Iran is our adversary. If you believe in giving Iran the benefit of the doubt, look to the recent statement made by Khamenei regarding America.
He states, “Battle and jihad are endless because evil and its front continue to exist…the battle will end when the society can get rid of the oppressors front with America at the head of it, which has expanded its claws on human mind, body and thought”.
