The U.S. Senate will take up the Democrats’ Gun-grab agenda today, with voting to begin on nine amendments expected to be offered to the underlying Gun Control Bill. The first of those is the Toomey-Manchin amendment that would expand background checks to some purchases at Gun Shows and online sales. The Democrats keep trying to water-down the bill to get enough votes for passage:
CNN – POLITICAL TICKER: The U.S. Senate will begin voting on amendments to gun legislation on Wednesday, including the leading proposals for tighter restrictions spurred by the Connecticut school massacre in December.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said the list of first votes would include the bipartisan yet controversial agreement on expanding background checks proposed by Sen. Joe Manchin, D-West Virginia, and Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pennsylvania.
Also up in the first round will be Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s proposal to ban the sale of semiautomatic firearms modeled after military style assault weapons.
President Barack Obama and many Democrats support a renewed assault weapons ban and an expansion of background checks as well as other measures before the Democratic-led Senate. Read More
If you remember, the Democrats began this push, crowing about how they were going to get an “Assault Weapons Ban,” a ban on “high-capacity magazines,” and “universal” background checks. But here we are, four months later with no chance of passage for the assault weapons ban, no chance of passage on banning high-capacity magazines, and only a long-shot chance of passing a very watered-down expansion of background checks. The Democrats desperately want to pass that as a fig leaf, so they can say they got something passed. Wouldn’t be ironic if the major gun legislation that ends up passing turns out to be increased funding for security in schools (in the underlying bill) – the very thing the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre said should be the focus just days after the Newtown shooting? He was vilified and mocked by the Left when he said it then. But that may end up being exactly what happens!
