Why Don’t We Just Call It Hillarygate?

Since the most scandalous scandal of modern history, the press has tacked on an obligatory –gate to the name of every potential scandal to come out of Washington. The potential of a Hillary Clinton Presidency raises a rather unique problem, one we should probably get ahead of now before things get too confusing.

It all began with a request for Hillary’s emails during the time she spent as Secretary of State. The request was a result of a Congressional investigation into her handling of the Benghazi attacks and the subsequent disinformation campaign and a potential cover-up. When news spread that she had been operating her own private email server rather than using a government email address, suspicions of wrongdoing began to mount. The fact that she turned over more than 30,000 emails, all on paper, and had deleted a similar number that she considered ‘personal’ only added to the problem. From there, things went from bad to worse.

Now there are questions about the security of classified documents, who knew about the private server, who else might have had a private email account, whether or not Hillary signed the Separation Agreement, and even who leaked the information and why. The scandal has even raised questions about the Clinton Foundation and who donated money during her stint as Secretary of State. Chances are the fingers of this scandal will eventually reach into places we never expected; such is the nature of any genuine Clinton scandal.

The problem here is that, with the spider web of interconnections between the various scandals, it is going to be difficult, if not impossible, to figure out exactly which scandal deserves its own ‘-gate’ and which should be lumped in with something else. If we are not careful, Hillary will have more ‘-gates’ than Bill has girlfriends.

My suggestion would be to get ahead of this issue by simply calling everything “Hillarygate”, and we can just specify which aspect of Hillarygate we’re talking about when we need to be more specific. I think that might avoid confusion and possibly some awkward names for a few of the scandals that are sure to erupt.
