WILLIS: Will Trump Play His Independent Card?

The day Ronald Reagan left office, Conservatives began looking for a leader who can not only clearly articulate conservatism from the heart, but who has the backbone to stand up and fight for those beliefs even when it is not the popular thing to do. Unfortunately leaders like that are in short supply.

Although Donald Trump doesn’t exactly fit the bill of someone who can clearly articulate conservatism, he has clearly captured the attention of a lot of people who are fed up with politicians who will not say what needs to be said, and who whine and whimper every time someone in the media criticizes them. Trump certainly has no fear of the press, nor is he afraid of the GOP leadership. Even his threat to run as an Independent shows how much fight he has.

I’ll have to see how I’m being treated by the Republicans,” Trump said. “Absolutely, if they’re not fair, that would be a factor.

Note that Trump did not threaten to run as an Independent if he loses the nomination, he threatened to run third party if he is not treated fairly by the GOP – two entirely different things, and as much as I don’t want him to either win the primary or run third party, I think is a reasonable attitude for him to take. Some in the GOP would like to see Trump excluded from the debates despite the fact that he is currently the front runner in many polls, so Trump very skillfully reminded the GOP that he holds the Independent card, or literally his Trump card, and they would do well to not give him reason to play it.

The GOP leadership rightfully sees Trump as a threat to their preferred candidate and you can be sure they will use any means possible to stop him, but they have discovered that they are dealing with someone who is quite capable of fighting back.
