IT’S A CRIMINAL HOLIDAY! Obama moves to increase background checks for gun buyers only

According to a statement issued by the White House, President Obama will sign new gun control executive orders tomorrow morning.

The orders will expand who is required to conduct background checks when they sell a firearm, will earmark $500 million for mental health care, and increase funding for the ATF and FBI to investigate federal gun crimes.

According to the statement, the orders will also focus on promoting smart gun technology and increasing the amount of personal data that is reported to the background check system.

Here is the brief statement from the White House:

Gun violence has taken a heartbreaking toll on too many communities across the country. Over the past decade in America, more than 100,000 people have been killed as a result of gun violence—and millions more have been the victim of assaults, robberies, and other crimes involving a gun. Many of these crimes were committed by people who never should have been able to purchase a gun in the first place. Over the same period, hundreds of thousands of other people in our communities committed suicide with a gun and nearly half a million people suffered other gun injuries. Hundreds of law enforcement officers have been shot to death protecting their communities. And too many children are killed or injured by firearms every year, often by accident. The vast majority of Americans—including the vast majority of gun owners—believe we must take sensible steps to address these horrible tragedies.

Mr President, are we going to tell the drug cartel they need to register as gun dealers also before they sell them to criminals on the streets of Chicago, Detroit, Baltimore, Austin, New Orleans, Las Vegas, or any other city? Let me know how that works ok? In the meantime I will use my FFL person to buy my guns like I always have in the past 30 times I bought a gun. This plan Mr President should now keep all those illegal guns off the street and out of the hands of the bad guys. (being sarcastic)

It will be interesting to see how they plan to implement this. If they are really going to require every person who wants to sell a gun as a private party to register as an FFL, I see another long term side agenda. Many people won’t bother to do it, or they won’t want to pay the fees, do the paperwork, or give up the search/seizure rights that FFL holders do. That means it will greatly reduce the flow of guns through private sales, over time reducing the number of guns in circulation. You can bet with all these new background ATF people fees are going to be going up. Not to mention that little issue of if you are an FFL holder you grant the ATF the right to inspect your premises any time they wish, unannounced. Plus FFL holders are allowed to buy wholesale, and have guns shipped directly to them, this might backfire on them making it easier and cheaper to get guns, especially for those in rural areas.

Some states require private party sales to go through a gun shop so a background check can be completed. That to me would be a more logical route, but I bet he can’t force states to do that, so expanding the federal license requirement is his only option.
