ABC News’ “The View” co-hosts Meghan McCain (shown above right) and Sunny Hostin (above left) clashed during a heated exchange on Tuesday after McCain slammed Democratic senators for tanking the Born Alive Infants Protection Act on Monday.
Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) sponsored the bill, which would have guaranteed medical care for all babies who survive a botched abortion attempt.
It also would have threatened prison time for doctors who didn’t try to save the lives of babies born alive.
But the bill failed to reach the 60-vote threshold on Monday. Three Republicans were absent from the vote, and only three Democratic senators joined their GOP colleagues in voting for the measure.
All of the 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls in the Senate rejected the bill.
And 10 Democratic senators who identified as Catholics also voted against the bill, as EWTN’s Catherine Hadro noted.

McCain blasted the Democratic senators, saying this was “an example” of “just how extreme the Left has gone.”
“So if Democrats want to win an election going forward, are you going to be the party of late-term abortion? The party of infanticide?” an incensed McCain demanded, adding that “this is well out of the mainstream of where” Americans are.
“And if you think that is how you win back the White House, I’m here to tell you: I spent a lot of time in red states. I’m from a red state. That is a losing argument,” McCain continued.
Hostin, who calls herself pro-life and is a Catholic, then chimed in. She told McCain, “I need to push back on that.”
“I thought you were pro-life like me?” McCain asked.
Hostin insisted, “I am. And that’s why I need to push back on it.”
Things became tense as McCain continually interrupted Hostin.
“So you think a baby born from a botched abortion should be put down like a dog or a cat?” McCain demanded of Hostin.
This spurred co-host Joy Behar (above center) to attempt to wrest control of the conversation from McCain — and hand it over to Hostin.
“Meghan, let her tell her story, please,” Behar asked.
But an outraged McCain replied, “It’s disgusting. It’s infanticide.”
McCain, Hostin and Behar all talked over one another at that point.
Behar asked McCain, “Is she going to be able to tell her thoughts on this or not?”
Hostin finally managed to say that her sister-in-law is an OBGYN and a Catholic as well, noting that this issue is “something that we talk about a lot.”
The nation doesn’t “need a new law for this,” Hostin argued, and she suggested this is why almost all of the Democratic senators voted against it. She said, “It’s already required to provide medical care to infants born alive.”
But she failed to note that many Democratic senators voted against the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act because they claimed that keeping an already-born baby alive infringed upon women’s rights — as if this posed some kind of conflict.
“I voted NO on this bill. Every woman has a fundamental right to access comprehensive reproductive health care and I remain committed to fighting for that,” Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) tweeted.

Fellow 2020 hopeful Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) also tweeted, “Republican politicians just tried (and failed) again to score political points at the expense of women. Enough. Women and their doctors should decide what’s best for their health — not the @SenateGOP.”

Hostin also said, “Passing this bill would impose legal and criminal penalties on doctors who don’t comply with that.”
But McCain fired back, insisting, “That doctor should be punished.”
The co-hosts talked over each other once again and Hostin demanded, “Can I just finish for one second?”
That’s when Behar quickly cut to a commercial break.
A new Marist poll commissioned by the Knights of Columbus revealed that 47 percent of Americans identify as pro-life, while 47 percent identify as pro-choice. Just last month, the previous Marist poll showed that only 38 percent of Americans called themselves pro-life, while 55 percent proclaimed to be pro-choice.
Democrats have faced a series of controversies surrounding their drastic shift toward late-term abortions over the last several weeks.
The state of New York passed a law on January 22 — the 46th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade — allowing abortions up until the time of birth. The state’s Reproductive Health Act even earned a standing ovation from Democratic lawmakers.
Virginia Democrats then horrified pro-life advocates even further after a video surfaced of Kathy Tran (D), a Virginia delegate, defending the late-abortion bill she sponsored. When asked if her bill allowed abortions up until the moment a mother was about to give birth, Tran replied, “Yes.”
Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) went a step further when he appeared to defend infanticide.
The governor said during a radio interview captured on video that “if a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen. The infant would be delivered … The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.”
