He Turned His Life Around For His Daughter; She Used That Experience For Her SAT Essay!

This is a tale we discovered on the website “Humans of New York,” which is a photoblog and book of street photographs and interviews taken on the streets of New York City and published by the New York Times.

As shown in this narrative, the father felt embarrassed by his history. However, having a child altered his outlook on life.

This is what he had to say:

“My immediate reaction was, ‘Oh no,’ since I wasn’t prepared to have a child. Her mother and I were both f**k-ups and drug users at the time. I’d just completed seven years in prison for robbery when I got out.

However, on Valentine’s Day in 1992, everything changed.

It was at that point that I discovered the baby was going to be a girl. I immediately began purchasing all of this frilly stuff. I was giddy with anticipation. I got more polite as time went on. Everybody would be treated with kindness and respect if I raised my kid that way. As a result, I became that person. And she grew into that person as well.

Every day after work, I picked her up from school to take her home. In addition, we went to the theater, museums, and Disney World on three separate occasions. Every year on my birthday, my friends and I would get dressed up and head to the Four Seasons for tea.

She graduated with honors and was named valedictorian of her class. She received a full academic scholarship to attend Duke. She is now enrolled in law school at New York University. When I look at her, I believe that she must have accomplished everything on her own. Because I’m a little bit of a’street.’ I grew up in a project neighborhood. And she’s gone so much farther than I could have imagined. As a result, I always believed I had nothing to do with it. Friends, on the other hand, have told me that I made a significant impact. And I did instill in her the importance of working hard and doing her best.

And she just shared with me that when she was required to write an essay for her SAT, she chose the title ‘My Father, My Hero.'”
