The internet lit up like a Christmas tree last night when Will Smith bizarrely walked up on stage during the Oscars and slapped comedian Chris Rock.
The altercation happened after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and following the slap, Smith continued to shout at Rock, demanding he keep his wife’s name out of his “f**king mouth.”
There are many who believe Smith did the right thing, but then there’s the other half who believe that it was wildly inappropriate and that Chris Rock handled it as best he could.
But regardless of what either side thinks, the Oscars announced they would be launching a “formal review” of the incident and condemned Smith’s actions.
Many insiders believed Rock would likely lose his “Best Actor” award for what he did.
On Monday afternoon, the Academy said in a statement, “The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law.”
In addition, the Academy shared the organization’s Standards of Conduct that “provide an ethical framework for Academy members.” “Members should act in a manner consistent with the good reputation of the Academy,” the Academy stated.
As listed in the document, unacceptable conduct includes “physical contact that is uninvited and, in the situation, inappropriate and unwelcome.”
Shortly after all of this, Will Smith suddenly decided to apologize to Chris Rock on Instagram:
“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.
I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.
I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us.
I am a work in progress.”
It certainly took him a long time to issue that rather brief and phony-sounding apology… something he could’ve easily done hours ago, but that was before threats from the Academy and backlash from the public started flooding in.
So the timing here is definitely suspect.
