Republicans on the House Oversight Committee have chastised Democrats for opposing a subpoena for Hunter Biden, who they claim has ‘invaluable’ knowledge about cobalt mining. Democrats have defended their decision.
“Democrats just denied our move to subpoena Hunter Biden,” the committee’s Republican members tweeted on Tuesday. “We are disappointed. “They are refusing to hold Hunter accountable for his unscrupulous business operations, which are increasing our reliance on China for renewable energy sources. It’s past time to hold people accountable.”

House Representative Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) moved to subpoena Hunter Biden, the controversial son of President Joe Biden, because Democrats want to force the U.S. Postal Service fleet to switch to electric vehicles as part of their effort to transition away from fossil fuels. Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, is a controversial figure in his own right.
“I have just moved to subpoena Hunter Biden as a witness at the House Oversight and Reform Committee’s hearing on electrifying [the Postal Service],” Biggs tweeted. “Hunter sold a cobalt mine in the United States to a Chinese business. Cobalt is required for the production of electric vehicles. Hunter’s knowledge is priceless!”
Following the denial of the request, Biggs tweeted: “Wow. Democrats have just dismissed my subpoena request for Hunter. They will continue to defend him at any costs. I suppose Democrats approve of his dubious financial dealings.”
Hunter Biden’s testimony has been sought previously by House Republicans on the Oversight and Reform Committee. Last week, Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., wrote to Committee Chair Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y.

It was revealed in the New York Times in November of 2021 that Hunter Biden had been a “part-owner of an investment venture engaged in the $3.8 billion acquisition by a Chinese conglomerate of one of the world’s largest cobalt resources.”
Since long before the Hunter Biden revelations, Republicans have asserted that the Democratic Party’s campaign for electric vehicles is a national security issue because it would place the United States at the hands of China’s hegemony in the electric battery and rare-earth metals industries.
