Senate Repubs Thwart Dems COVID Bill; Wants Mishandling Of Immigrations Fixed

Republicans thwarted a Democratic attempt Tuesday to open debate in the Senate on a $10 billion COVID-19 deal, attempting to link the bipartisan package to an election-year confrontation over immigration restrictions that Democrats would find politically unpalatable. A day after Democratic and Republican negotiators achieved a deal on funding treatments, vaccines, and testing, a Democratic attempt to overcome a procedural obstacle failed 52-47. All 50 Republicans voted against the measure, leaving Democrats 13 votes shy of the 60 needed to win.
