Report: Will Smith Banned From Attending Academy Of Awards Functions For Next 10 Years

The “King Richard” actor is reportedly barred from attending any Academy functions for the next 10 years after slapping comedian Chris Rock during the Oscars for making a joke about the actor’s wife.

According to several sources, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors imposed the decade-long ban on Friday, about two weeks after the dramatic brawl at the 94th Annual Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, which was broadcast live on ABC and CBS.

Mr. Smith’s disgusting and hurtful behavior on stage overshadowed the celebration of the many individuals in our community who accomplished amazing work this past year, according to the Academy Awards Board.

Smith, 53, took the stage after Rock hit the comedian following a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith. The artist then returned to his seat and yelled at Rock, who appeared surprised, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f—— mouth!”

Smith returned to the stage minutes later to accept his best actor award for his portrayal in “King Richard,” to a standing ovation.

“We did not address the scenario in the room appropriately during our telecast. We apologize for this,” the Academy stated in its statement. “This was a chance for us to set an example for our guests, spectators, and Academy family members worldwide, and we fell short – unprepared for the unprecedented.”

The Academy statement made no mention of Smith’s Oscar being revoked or of him being barred from future nominations or victories.

Smith would be “not permitted to attend any Academy activities or programs, in person or digitally, including but not limited to the Academy Awards,” the group stated.

The Academy expressed gratitude for Rock’s performance, noting that he maintained his calm “under remarkable circumstances.”

The 57-year-old comic has remained silent on the incident, stating during a stand-up gig shortly after the Oscars that he was still “processing” the incident.

Smith resigned from the Academy earlier this month, shortly after the academy said it would initiate disciplinary proceedings against him.

“I have reacted directly to the Academy’s notice of disciplinary hearing, and I fully intend to face any and all repercussions for my conduct,” Smith stated at the time, describing his acts as “shocking, hurtful, and unacceptable.”

One of the main goals of a ban on Smith was to restore faith in the Academy, according to the Academy, which described the decision as “a first step toward a greater aim.”

Additionally, it expressed the desire that this can be a time of healing and restoration for all those affected.
