After serving in the highest levels of the U.S. government, Dr. Anthony Fauci, former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), is embarking on a new chapter in his illustrious career. In December, Fauci retired after nearly four decades heading the NIAID, a division of the National Institutes of Health. Fauci has fostered the nation's public health since he started his tenure with the NIH under the Johnson administration in 1968. He has since provided counsel and insight to seven presidents, amassing accolades and a reputation for his indelible impact on public policy. Now, Fauci turns to teaching the next generation of medical professionals to continue his discernible legacy.

Georgetown University announced on Monday that Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, a globally renowned infectious disease expert, will join their school of medicine as a "Distinguished University Professor" - the highest professional honour awarded by the institution.

Effective from July 1, Dr. Fauci will be part of the Division of Infectious Diseases, where he will provide clinical care, carry out research, and mentor aspiring doctors. Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia expressed his gratitude for Dr. Fauci’s leadership and dedication to mentor the next generation of leaders to address the pressing issues of our time.

Additionally, Dr. Fauci has also been inducted into Georgetown's McCourt School of Public Policy, which offers master's degrees in public policy.

Overall, this announcement is an honor for the University and serves as a testament to Dr. Fauci's lifelong commitment to public service and global humanitarianism.

Dr. Anthony Fauci became a household name as the face of the United States' response to the COVID pandemic after joining the White House Coronavirus Task Force in March 2020. As the public turned to him for guidance, he faced criticism for his recommendations on face masks, first advising Americans not to wear them before altering his advice. Consequently, states and local governments instituted strict mask regulations for months. In 2021, President Joe Biden appointed Fauci as the chief medical advisor to the president.

Fauci came under fire when, under oath before Congress, he stated that NIH did not fund gain-of-function research at the Chinese lab, which many believe to be the source of COVID. However, documents obtained by The Intercept revealed that the NIH had sponsored a type of gain-of-function research at the lab. Senator Rand Paul, who famously sparred with Fauci during Senate hearings on COVID, recently questioned whether Fauci should still receive government funding due to his ambiguous statements made prior to his retirement.

Dr. Fauci's employment status has become a topic of uncertainty, as observed by Paul. The senator raised concerns that Dr. Fauci might still be receiving taxpayer-funded benefits associated with active public service, including legal counsel and protective services. However, recent news shows that Dr. Fauci is all set to join Georgetown University, which marks his exit from the federal government.

In his own words, Dr. Fauci is excited to be associated with Georgetown, known for its clinical and academic excellence and a strong emphasis on the Jesuit tradition of public service. He believes that it marks a natural progression of his scientific, clinical, and public health career, in alignment with the intellectual rigor, integrity, and service-mindedness of Jesuit institutions from his high school and college days.
