Bob Marley Biopic "One Love" Rocks Box Office; Madame Web Flops in Marvel Universe

The biopic Bob Marley: One Love from Paramount Pictures defied predictions and opened at No. 1 at the box office with a $27.7 million opening weekend, while Sony's Madame Web bombed with one of the worst openings for a Marvel superhero film.

On Tuesday, both movies debuted in cinemas in an effort to attract Valentine's Day viewers. However, despite mostly negative reviews, One Love ended up being the much favored choice in cinemas on a weekend that was previously anticipated to belong to Madame Web, according to the AP. Ziggy, Marley's son, said in a statement on Sunday, "We appreciate the public for supporting our movie and helping to showcase the message of one love."

Starring Kingsley Ben-Adir and produced with the Marley estate's assistance, One Love fared about on par with other successful musical biopics such as Rocketman and Elvis. 47 foreign territories contributed an additional $29 million.

One Love, which cost around $70 million to produce, follows Marley as he worked on the 1977 album Exodus and prepares for a significant performance for his home Jamaica. With a "A" CinemaScore, viewers awarded the movie a far better rating, even as reviewers criticized it for depending too heavily on biopic cliches, giving it a 43% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Conversely, Madame Web was a complete bust. Sony is projecting a $15.2 million weekend and a $25.8 million six-day total revenue. Critics (13% "fresh") and audiences (a "C+" CinemaScore) were in agreement.

These are Comscore's anticipated ticket sales for US and Canadian cinemas from Friday through Sunday. Mon. will see the publication of the final domestic statistics.
