Rep. Mark Green (R-Tenn.) said two weeks ago that he would retire at the conclusion of his current term, but he has since confirmed to The Hill that he will seek reelection in November.
Following his announcement last week that he was "seriously contemplating" his intention to retire, Green, the head of the House Homeland Security Committee, Tennessee Republican, sparked rumors that he may run for reelection to the lower house. In a post on Truth Social on Thursday, the former president of the United States encouraged him to run for reelection.
The Tennessee Republican announced his formal reversal shortly after, saying in a statement that he had decided to run again after receiving calls from a number of individuals, including Trump.
Even though I made the decision to leave Congress at the end of the year, I have gotten a lot of calls from colleagues, constituents, and President Trump asking me to change my mind since I made that statement. General McArthur's quote, "Duty, honor, nation," struck me as fitting for a monument at West Point. I came to understand once again that I owed it to my nation," Green said in a statement.
"In order to assist President Trump put a stop to this border issue once and for all, I will be campaigning for re-election so I can be here on Day 1 next year," he said.
A day after the House voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on its second attempt, Green, who has represented Tennessee's 7th Congressional District since 2019, revealed his decision to resign.
The congressman said that it was time for him to "return home" after successfully securing Mayorkas' impeachment.
"I pledged to my voters at the beginning of the 118th Congress to enact laws to protect our borders and hold Secretary Mayorkas responsible. It is time for me to go home now that H.R. 2 has been approved by the House and Secretary Mayorkas has been impeached, the man said in a statement.
He did, however, also take aim at the Congress as an institution, describing it as "broken beyond most possibilities of repair." This feeling is consistent with other legislators seeking to leave this Congress, which has been characterized as one of the least productive in recent memory.
Reading our Framers' papers over the last several months has brought back memories of their intention for representatives to be citizen-legislators who would take office for a term before leaving. Most of the time, there is no way to fix the dysfunctional state of our nation and Congress. At that time, Green said, "I have come to recognize that our struggle is with Washington, not here inside Washington."
Shortly before making his decision on Thursday, Trump publicly urged Green to run for reelection, praising his "political abilities" and the "great job" he has done in Congress.
"Mark Green's political abilities and outstanding performance as a Congressman have given him many alternatives. However, considering his outstanding work as the Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, I really hope he would compete for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives. I fully and completely support him if he does! Trump wrote.
