According to recent results from a nationwide NBC News survey, registered voters' interest for the 2024 presidential race has dropped to a level not seen in over 20 years. In contrast to past years, just 64% of respondents say they are very interested in the election that will take place in November.

According to Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt of Hart Research Associates and Republican pollster Bill McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies, "Americans do not agree on much these days, but nothing unites the country more than voters' desire to tune this election out."

In contrast to the greater rates of interest shown at comparable junctures in previous presidential elections—74% in 2008, 67% in 2012, 69% in 2016, and an astounding 77% in 2020—the fall is noteworthy. With the exception of a brief decline to 59% in early 2012, which rebounded in following surveys, these numbers highlight a notable decline in voter excitement.

Even with the general decline in enthusiasm, incumbent President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are still in fierce competition in the political sphere. According to the same survey, Mr. Biden is just two points behind Mr. Trump in a straight-up contest.

The difference indicates that although Mr. Trump continues to have an advantage in terms of perceived skill and controlling inflation, Mr. Biden has made progress in important areas like abortion rights and national unity.

However, some former Biden supporters will not use his lever in this election.

"As president, I do not believe Biden has accomplished anything. And in my opinion, if Trump wins, everything will remain unchanged from what it was before to Biden's election, Devin Fletcher, a survey responder, told NBC News.

Democratic voter Mr. Fletcher, 37, of Wayne, Michigan, said he still intends to support Mr. Biden, although he is not too excited about it. "I simply do not think I have a candidate I am thrilled to support,"

Another New Jersey voter who answered the poll without giving her name and supported Mr. Biden in 2020 said she just would not bother this time. "Our candidates are terrible. Voting for Biden is not something I would do. He took no action. Furthermore, I will not vote for Trump at all," she said.
