Yellowstone had all the elements of a long-running series: a great plot, great acting, stunning scenery and filming, a lot of spinoffs, and it was a surefire numbers hit. The first part of the fifth season of the Paramount Network show ended in January 2023, and fans could not wait for the next set of episodes. Unfortunately, there were a lot of unclear and conflicting stories about Part 2, and some cast and crew members of the show did not say anything about what was going on. There was finally news in May 2023 that Season 5 of Yellowstone would be the last.

Fans and reviewers were both shocked when Yellowstone was taken off the air. It looked like the show was still at its best. Variety says that Yellowstone was the most-watched cable show of the 2022–2023 season. The fifth season premiere had 12.1 million watchers in the same day, making it the most-watched scripted series premiere of 2022. Kevin Costner won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series in 2023. It looked like he would soon win more awards.

With all the chaos and reports about Yellowstone's closure, it was hard to tell why the show was ending. But as time went on, it became clear. Find out why Season 6 of Yellowstone is not going to happen.

Yellowstone will not have a Season 6 because Costner and the Yellowstone team, which includes author Taylor Sheridan, are at odds with each other. They were going to split Season 5 into two parts, but Costner did not agree with it. He had less time to work on his own project, Horizon: An American Saga, because of the split, and he had already asked for less screen time in part one. That wish could not come true, though, because Costner's John Dutton is the main character of the show.

It looks like Costner did not like these choices, and he may have already had one foot out the door. Costner did want to come back for Season 6, though, and he and the show were talking about his deal and pay at the time. After the talks broke down, the star reportedly told people during his divorce process, "I could not help them [Yellowstone] any more." We tried to work something out, but they offered me less money than in previous seasons, and there were problems with the creative. We came up with a number, and they turned it down.

SAG-AFTRA and WGA went on strike, which made this scheduling dispute and Costner's eventual departure even more difficult. During the strikes, which lasted most of summer 2023, nothing could be produced, written, or filmed, even if Costner and the people working on the show reached a deal.

The strikes are over, and now the show can go on. Part Two of Yellowstone Season 5 will air in November 2024, two years after Part One, but it is still not clear if Costner will be in any shows.

But it looks like he will at least show up for a short time to end Dutton's story. His contract includes a moral clause that says his character can not be killed off in a way he does not agree with. Sheridan has also said that he would never kill off one of his characters in a bad way. "This makes me sad. It cuts off the ending of his character. It cuts it off, but it does not change it...He told The Hollywood Reporter, "I do not do f***-you car crashes."

While it is sad that Yellowstone is ending, there is some good news: a new show will be starting in its place. Matthew McConaughey will be the star of the new show, but not much else is known about it. We do not know if the new show will have anything to do with the original Yellowstone story or the Duttons. We also do not know who will be on the new show. No matter what, it is good to know that the Yellowstone story is not over.
