According to a recent poll, former President Donald Trump is the top option for the Republican presidential primary in 2024, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis coming in second. If the Republican primary were held today, 48% of likely voters said they would back Trump, according to a poll released by Harvard CAPS-Harris on Friday, while 25% said they would vote for DeSantis.

In the event that Trump does not run again in 2024, 48% of Republican voters have indicated their support for DeSantis, with former Vice President Mike Pence trailing far behind with 15%. If Republican primary voters could only choose between Trump and DeSantis, 55% would back Trump and 45% would back DeSantis.

In a hypothetical Republican primary between just DeSantis and Trump, though, the Florida governor would win with 52% of the vote to Trump’s 48%.

According to the poll, DeSantis is ahead of Biden by 4% and ahead of Harris by 5%, meaning he would defeat both of the Democratic frontrunner candidates but not by as great a margin as Trump. On December 14-15, 2018, 1,851 eligible voters participated in the Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll.

Meanwhile, Democratic voters aren’t quite as unified in their support for one candidate in the presidential race. In the 2024 Democratic primaries, President Joe Biden received support from 36% of respondents, while Vice President Kamala Harris received support from 10%. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is at 7%, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is at 7%, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is at 6%, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is at 5% despite being too young to run.

Trump might be victorious versus the leading Democratic candidates. The poll found that in a hypothetical matchup between the former president and either Biden or Harris, he would win by a margin of 5%.
