Karine Jean-Pierre, the press secretary for the White House, and CBS News journalist Ed O’Keefe got into an argument on Wednesday about rumors that top-secret documents had been discovered at the president’s former think tank office in Washington, D.C. O’Keefe asked the press secretary whether she was aware of any discussions taking place inside the White House regarding the documents after they were first discovered in early November during Jean-daily Pierre’s briefing.

I know you guys are going to have a lot of questions about this, so look. Jean-Pierre answered, “I understand that. “I’m sure you guys will have a lot of inquiries about the particulars and the process. And I can assure you that I won’t deviate from the president’s outline. I won’t add anything to what my fellow White House counsel colleagues have said. If you need any further details or information, I would recommend that you contact them. I’m trying to be careful here. I want to be certain that we handle this properly.

O’Keefe continued by mentioning a statement made by President Joe Biden in early 2021 in which he promised to “acknowledge” and “fix” his errors.

You’re the one here discussing this with us, then. We are asking you because of this. So let’s just keep it in mind,” O’Keefe told Jean-Pierre.

Jean-Pierre intervened, “Ed, Ed, Ed, we don’t need this — we work extremely well together.” We don’t need to engage in this type of conflict. You can ask me anything, and I’ll do my best to respond.

“You’re outlining your portion of the work, so that’s part of the reason we’re laying that out. We’re outlining our responsibility here, which is to ask questions,” O’Keefe responded.

“I know, but I’m just suggesting that we shouldn’t argue. Ed, you don’t have to argue with me here,” Jean-Pierre responded.

After it was made public that secret records had been discovered at the Penn Biden Center in November 2022 and quickly turned over to the National Archives, the discussion followed. Later on Wednesday, it was revealed that further sensitive documents had been discovered by Biden’s legal team. This prompted fresh criticism of the president.

Republicans have expressed their outrage over the finding of the records, and House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) has launched an investigation and sent a letter to the National Archives and White House Counsel’s Office requesting documents and communications.

NARA concealed the fact that President Biden, after serving as Vice President, kept highly sensitive records in a closet at his own office for months, neither from Committee Republicans nor from the general public. Days before the 2022 midterm elections, NARA learned about these records but failed to inform the public that President Biden might have been breaking the law, Comer wrote. “The Committee is concerned that President Biden’s own improper handling of classified documents has exposed sources and techniques.”

The president told reporters on Tuesday that he was “surprised” with the discovery. The White House declined to comment on when Biden was briefed on the confidential documents.
