On Sunday, comedian Chris Rock told US politicians that the former president would only become "more popular" if he were to be arrested.
When in Washington, D.C., for a ceremony honoring Adam Sandler, Rock made the remarks. The well-connected group in the capital, which included former Speaker Nancy Pelosi and officials from President Biden's administration, was the target of his first jokes.
Are you guys going to actually detain Trump? Rock enquired. "Do you realize that this will just increase his popularity? Arresting Tupac is like that. Simply put, he'll sell more records. Are you a moron?" As the room chuckled, he said.
Rock continued by making fun of the circumstances surrounding Trump's conceivable indictment, which were brought on by his association with adult film star Stormy Daniels.
"In order to keep his wife from learning, [Trump] f—-ed a pornstar and paid off someone. That's sweet, "Stone said.
"We have all been deceived. Wouldn't it be nice if the person who cheated on you bought off someone to keep you from finding out?" Added he.
Trump stated in a tweet over the weekend that he could be arrested on Tuesday in New York City. He urged his fans to "resist" and "take our country back" if he was taken into custody.
"NOW ILLEGAL LEAKS FROM A CORRUPT & HIGHLY POLITICAL MANHATTAN DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE, WHICH HAS ALLOWED NEW RECORDS TO BE SET IN VIOLENT CRIME & WHOSE LEADER IS FUNDED BY GEORGE SOROS, INDICATE THAT, WITH NO CRIME BEING ABLE TO BE PROVEN, & BASED ON AN OLD & FULLY DEBUNKED (BY NUMEROUS OTHER PROSECUTORS!) FAIRYTALE, THE FAR & AWAY LEADING REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE & FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, WILL BE ARRESTED ON TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK. PROTEST, TAKE OUR NATION BACK!, [sic]" Trump posed to his Truth Social account.
Pelosi, a Democrat from California, was among the first to criticize Trump on Saturday. "The former president's announcement this morning is reckless: doing so to keep himself in the news & to foment unrest among his supporters," Pelosi tweeted. "He cannot hide from his violations of the law, disrespect for our elections and incitements to violence. Rightfully, our legal system will decide how to hold him accountable."
