At least six people were killed on Monday in the latest mass shooting in the United States, which took place at a private Christian primary school in Nashville, Tennessee.

The shooting, which occurred at approximately 10:00 a.m. at Covenant School in the Green Hills district of southwest Nashville, resulted in the deaths of three students and three teachers or staff members, according to Metropolitan Nashville Police Department spokesperson Don Aaron. The shooter, who has yet to be named, was a teenage girl.

Aaron reported that as responding officers were clearing the first floor of the school, they heard gunfire coming from the second story. Five cops "quickly raced to the gunfire" and encountered the gunman as she was firing her firearm. After 14 minutes of receiving the first emergency call, two cops shot and killed the suspect, according to the spokesman.

After entering the building through an unguarded side door, the gunman made her way up to the second floor and opened fire. She had at least one handgun and two assault rifles.

Parents of pupils at Covenant School were advised by police and Nashville Fire Department officials to a staging location at Woodmont Baptist Church.

The Covenant Presbyterian Church and its affiliated school, the Covenant School, opened in 2001. The school welcomes students in preschool through sixth grade. It includes over 200 students and 40 faculty and staff.

Several school shootings in the United States over the past year have prompted renewed calls for stricter gun control laws. In June of last year, Congress passed the first comprehensive gun control legislation in the United States in nearly three decades. The Uvalde, Texas, school shooting, which claimed the lives of 19 students and 2 instructors, was a major impetus for the passage of that bill.
