In a state where the border and high rates of illegal immigration have become flashpoints, a county sheriff from Arizona with direct experience of the border problem is backing Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) for the Senate. On Wednesday, Democratic candidate for the battleground state of California, Santa Cruz County Sheriff David Hathaway, who calls the Democratic congressman a friend of law enforcement, backed Gallego.

"Whereas some politicians only utilize the concept of the border for their own political advantage, Ruben Gallego has been a longstanding partner of Arizona's border law enforcement agencies and communities, striving to give the money we sorely need to establish a safe but lucrative border. Hathaway told the Washington Examiner in a statement, "Rubin is different." "Rubin Gallego in the U.S. Senate is necessary for law enforcement and border communities in Arizona." I am honored to support his candidacy.

2020 saw the election of Hathaway, a former director of the local Drug Enforcement Administration office. The sheriff is in charge of a county that contains Nogales, a vital crossing point into Mexico. Considered a Democratic bastion in the Grand Canyon State, Santa Cruz County casts majority votes for Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016 and for Joe Biden in 2020.

The county of Hathaway is part of the Tucson sector of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which encompasses Nogales and extends from the Yuma County boundary to the New Mexico State line. According to publicly available monthly figures, this area has had the greatest increase in migrant flow lately.

Over 250,000 migrants entered Arizona from October 2023 to January 2024, surpassing the number of migrants entering the sectors of Del Rio, Texas, and San Diego, California.

In a statement, Gallego said, "I am honored to have Sheriff Hathaway's support. Keeping Arizonans safe will always be my top priority." "A seasoned leader dedicated to enhancing public safety and decreasing criminal activity, he recognizes the significance of safeguarding our border while upholding mutually advantageous trade relations with Mexico."

Hathaway's support for Gallego coincides with the release of his campaign of his first television commercial in an effort to introduce himself to Arizonans for the Senate. The Cook Political Report currently rates the contest between Gallego and the front-runner Republican, Kari Lake, as a toss-up. Control of the Senate, where Democrats have a razor-thin majority of 51-49, may rely on the contest to succeed retiring Independent Senator Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ).
