During last week's Democratic National Convention held in Chicago, the Progressive National Alliance vociferously criticized Vice President Kamala Harris and the broader Democratic Party, simultaneously withdrawing its support. Central to the controversy was the group's disappointment over the party's refusal to include a Palestinian speaker. This decision led to Muslim Women for Harris-Walz, an independent coalition originally backing the Harris-Walz ticket, to disband in protest. Their social media post bemoaned the lack of empathy their own candidates displayed for Palestinian Americans and Palestinians in comparison to other convention attendees.

The fallout represents a significant challenge for Vice President Harris as she attempts to navigate tensions within her party's base between progressive Jews and pro-Palestinian factions. The backdrop of this internal conflict is a recent increase in violence in the Middle East, including a devastating attack by Hamas and subsequent Israeli retaliatory strikes. These events have not only cost lives but have also inflamed debates within American political circles about how best to support Palestinian rights without condoning violence.

The dissent within Democratic ranks has been further evidenced by up to 15% of Democratic voters casting protest votes during state primary elections against nominating President Joe Biden for a second term due in part to dissatisfaction with his administration's policy towards Israel. The peaceful protests that marked much of the DNC were underscored by earlier violent outbreaks, highlighting deep divisions on these issues.

Amidst this tumultuous political landscape, former President Donald Trump has seen a resurgence in polling figures against Vice President Harris. Despite favorable mainstream media coverage of Harris - reflecting editorial biases - Trump has managed to regain ground in key battleground states according to various polls. This tightening race suggests that domestic discontent over foreign policy decisions could significantly influence electoral outcomes.

Harris now faces an uphill battle not only against her Republican opponent but also within her own party as she seeks to heal rifts exacerbated by international conflicts and domestic policy decisions. Her ability to reconcile these divisions may well determine her success in the upcoming election cycle and set the tone for Democratic foreign policy positions moving forward.
