In an increasingly tight race for Virginia's gubernatorial seat, a recent poll from the University of Mary Washington's Center for Leadership and Media Studies reveals a neck-and-neck contest between Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger and Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears for the 2025 election. Each candidate garnered 39% support among respondents asked to choose if the election were today. The same survey explored a hypothetical face-off between Spanberger and Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares, showing a similarly tight margin, with Spanberger slightly ahead at 40% to Miyares' 39%.

Virginia's unique political landscape, which restricts governors to one consecutive term, opens the door for fresh faces each election cycle. Although current Gov. Glenn Youngkin is ineligible for immediate re-election, his approval ratings remain a topic of interest, showcasing a divergence from other recent polls. While this survey pegged his approval at 46%, others have shown figures exceeding 50%.

The poll also touched on national figures, revealing a close competition between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, highlighting the polarized political climate extending beyond Virginia.

With significant portions of those surveyed undecided or unfamiliar with Earle-Sears’ and Miyares' tenures in office, raising their profiles appears as their next major hurdle ahead of the looming electoral battle.

This assessment draws on responses from 1,000 Virginia residents—including 870 registered voters and 774 likely voters—underscoring its comprehensive approach to gauging public opinion as the state gears up for another closely watched gubernatorial contest.
