Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced over the weekend that Iran is open to dialogue with the United States, but only if the discussions occur on an "equal footing." His comments come as tensions rise over Iran’s accelerating nuclear program and the potential for military intervention by the U.S. and its allies.

President Donald Trump has been pushing for a new diplomatic agreement to limit Iran’s nuclear activities, setting a deadline of May. If no deal is reached, Trump has hinted at the possibility of military strikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities. Pezeshkian, however, criticized the U.S. approach, stating that threats and negotiations cannot coexist. Speaking to Iranian state-run media, he remarked, “The Islamic Republic wants dialogue from an equal position, not that they want to negotiate with Iran on the one hand and threaten it on the other. If you want negotiations, what is the point of threatening?”

These remarks come against the backdrop of suspected U.S. airstrikes on Yemen’s Houthi rebels. The Houthis, an Iran-backed faction, have been targeting commercial ships and American military vessels in the Red Sea region for over 18 months. While Trump has been vocal about his desire for diplomacy, his administration has simultaneously increased military pressure on Iran through its actions in Yemen. Last month, Trump directly addressed Iran on his Truth Social platform, calling for an immediate end to its support for the Houthis and issuing a stern warning about the consequences of continued aggression.

Meanwhile, analysts report that Iran’s nuclear program is advancing rapidly, with uranium enrichment nearing levels required for a nuclear weapon. Experts suggest that Iran could have the capability to construct a nuclear device within days. This development has prompted both the U.S. and Israel to reaffirm their commitment to preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to discuss this critical issue in a meeting with Trump at the White House on Monday.

The situation underscores the delicate balance between diplomacy and military action as the U.S. and its allies navigate rising tensions with Iran. The Iranian nuclear issue is expected to dominate international headlines in the coming weeks, shaping global security and diplomatic strategies.
