Several House Republicans have privately informed Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-CA) that they will not vote to have her removed from the Foreign Affairs Committee, according to a statement she made on Sunday.

Omar made her statement after three other House members openly declared that they would not vote to have her removed from the committee. According to Omar, who appeared on CNN’s State of the Union, the GOP members who won’t vote to have her removed are doing so “because they don’t want to be perceived as hypocrites.”

In the previous Congress, they “took a stand, and they will continue to do that,” Omar said. “And I believe that is a really important part of this, because their stance, to support two members who were accused of inciting violence and endangering the lives of members of Congress, was to say that the majority shouldn’t have the power to kick the minority out of their committees, and I hope that they keep their word,” the speaker continued.

Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (GA) and Paul Gosar (AZ) were demoted from their committee assignments during the previous Congress. According to CBS News, Greene was fired as a result of her prior to her time in Congress releasing films with anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim views as well as different conspiracy videos. According to CNN, Gosar was fired after he uploaded a modified anime movie to social media that appeared to show him attacking President Joe Biden and killing Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Three House Republicans have openly declared they will not vote to remove Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee as of Sunday: Ken Buck (R-CO), Nancy Mace (R-SC), and Victoria Spartz (R-IN). Due to his recovery from an accident, Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) will be unable to cast a vote. According to Axios, the vote has a 5-vote margin, meaning Omar can still be kept on the committee even if one more member votes against it.

Omar’s likely expulsion from the Foreign Affairs Committee comes just a few days after Democratic Reps. Adam Schiff (CA) and Eric Swalwell (CA) were expelled from the House Intelligence Committee by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. When directing the investigations into former President Donald Trump’s alleged ties to Russia, Schiff, according to McCarthy, purposefully deceived the American public, using claims that Swalwell had a relationship with a Chinese agent.

The two Democrats from California and Omar have criticized McCarthy’s actions harshly, saying they were motivated by “political revenge” against them and other Democrats and Republicans who voted to remove Greene and Gosar from their committees.
