Joseph Biden criticized Republicans on Tuesday after several of them called for the defunding of the FBI and other federal law enforcement organizations.
In January, a shooter killed 11 people in Monterey Park, California, where Biden spoke. The president asked relevant government departments to make sure they are upholding the gun laws Biden signed into law last year and issued an executive order to strengthen background checks on buyers of weapons.
Republicans in Congress and the president are presently arguing over Biden's budget proposal because they believe it doesn't go far enough to cut the debt.
Republicans have argued for the defunding or scaling back of a number of departments of justice. Conservatives have been accused of being "weaponized" by the Biden administration's use of the DOJ. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) pushed for the abolition of many departments at the Conservative Political Action Conference last month.
"We either get this government back on our side or we defund and get rid of or abolish the FBI, CDC, ATF, DOJ, every single one of 'em," Gaetz stated amid thunderous applause. And I don't believe it is too much to ask, either.
The notion was rejected by Biden on Tuesday.
The expansion of access to mental health treatments for individuals affected by gun violence was something I outlined in my budget last week, according to Biden. Republicans in Congress should approve my budget rather than advocating for cuts to these services, eliminating the FBI, or defunding the police, as we hear from our MAGA Republican allies.
