Former Representative Lee Zeldin (R-NY), who unsuccessfully campaigned for governor of New York last year, backed former President Donald Trump on Monday, making him the newest Republican politician to do so in advance of the 2024 primary.

In a tweet published by the Trump team, Zeldin said, "The GOP is filled with amazing talent to save our country from the failed policies of the Biden Admin." Trump, the 45th and 47th President of the United States, will be our nominee in 2024. Our lives will be more liberated, our economy will be stronger, and our streets will be safer. He has my utmost backing.

Zeldin's support is important since he previously appeared with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) as part of DeSantis' book tour in April, and he was allegedly anticipating supporting the governor when he entered the 2024 campaign.

Since 2015, Zeldin has served as a congressman for a sizable portion of Long Island. In addition, he campaigned for governor of New York as a Republican last year. In the traditionally Democratic state, he lost to incumbent Gov. Kathy Hochul (D), but experts said Zeldin's effective campaign helped other candidates on the down ticket win.

In New York, DeSantis canvassed for Zeldin in October.

Zeldin thought about seeking for Republican National Committee chairman after his election as governor. He finally decided against it, citing RNC procedures that favored Ronna McDaniel, the current chairperson.

Zeldin is the most current in a line of Republican elected leaders to support Trump in recent weeks as part of the campaign of the former president. Trump received the support of a number of Florida lawmakers last week, which also happened to be DeSantis's trip to Washington, D.C.
