According to speculations in US media on Thursday, President Joe Biden might officially launch his long-anticipated campaign for a second term as early as next week. The Washington Post and CNN, among other publications, have reported, citing anonymous sources, that Biden plans to introduce a video to kick off his re-election campaign.

According to The Post, this may occur on Tuesday, which marks the anniversary of the day in 2019 when Biden entered the 2020 presidential election against President Donald Trump. The report made clear, however, that the plans were not set in stone and may be delayed.

Biden would be 86 by the time he finished serving a second term, making him the oldest US president in history at the age of 80. Trump is the Republicans' leading candidate right now, which increases the likelihood that one of the most contentious elections in US history will be rerun.

2019 saw Biden begin his campaign with a video speech. Although many originally saw him as a failed politician who had left politics after serving as Barack Obama's vice president, he went on to win the Democratic nomination and beat Trump in a contentious election that the Republican sought to overturn.

Biden has often hinted that he would run, most recently saying last week while visiting Ireland: "I told you my plan is to run again."

Supporters of Biden have nonetheless noted that he is not always in a rush. Republicans are lurching toward a potentially messy primary fight, but Biden benefits from having no real competition inside his own party.

Washington is also beginning a protracted, high-stakes political battle over raising the US borrowing ceiling, a conflict that might lead to a US debt default and significant economic instability at some point in the next weeks.
