The former president described the late Tucker Carlson as "terrific" and expressed shock at his firing from the network on Monday.
"I'm surprised. I'm shocked, he's a really nice guy and skilled, as you know, and he had extremely great ratings," Trump said in an earlier-to-day interview with Newsmax presenter Greg Kelly. "We're just learning about it right now, almost as we speak."
A co-founder of the Daily Caller News Foundation, Fox News confirmed Carlson's resignation from the network on Monday morning, stating that they had "agreed to part ways." The 8 p.m. time hour where "Tucker Carlson Tonight" once aired will now have rotating hosts anchoring news programming, according to host Harris Faulkner.
Less than a week ago, Fox News and Dominion Voting Systems reached a settlement in their legal dispute for $787.5 million, avoiding a trial where Carlson and other network stars may have been compelled to testify.
"I don't know if it was voluntary or it was somebody fired," Trump added. "But I think Tucker's been terrific, he's been, especially over the last year or so, he's been terrific to me."
A co-host of "Fox and Friends," Brian Kilmeade, took up the 8 p.m. time slot on Monday.
Perhaps he departed because he wasn't given full control, said Trump. He may desire complete freedom, but I was astonished by it.
Following Carlson's resignation from Fox News, Newsmax CEO Christopher Ruddy said in a statement posted earlier Monday that the network will experience a windfall.
