The shooting of a pregnant woman Wednesday night inside an East Nashville drugstore on suspicion of theft is being looked into by Metro Nashville Police. Police said that just before 8 p.m., a Walgreens team leader named Mitarius Boyd, 21, shot the alleged shoplifter in the parking lot of the store on Gallatin Avenue, claiming that he was acting in self-defense.
According to police, Travonsha Ferguson, 34, who was seven months pregnant, is currently being treated at Vanderbilt Medical Center in a critical but stable condition.
The infant was delivered through emergency cesarean section; he or she was not hit by gunshots and is now in a critical but stable condition, according to the police.
According to the police, their investigation reveals that Boyd was informed by another employee that two ladies were robbing the store of merchandise. He insisted that he observed the women loading merchandise into a shopping cart and a big over-the-shoulder bag.
According to authorities, he then started recording the women with his cellphone and followed them out of the store without paying for the merchandise. Boyd claimed that when he walked up to the back of the car, the women began loading the stuff into the trunk.
Boyd said that after one of the ladies sprayed him with Mace, he got out his rifle and started shooting.
Police said that the man claimed to be terrified and unsure about their armed status. After leaving the area in their car, the women. Boyd then returned to the shop and made a 911 call.
Ferguson was driven to General Hospital by the other women before they left. Ferguson was transported by paramedics to Vanderbilt Medical Center with several gunshot wounds. Boyd reportedly cooperated with officers, and both his rifle and cellphone were taken.
Detectives will present their findings to the District Attorney's Office when the investigation is over to see if Boyd will be charged.
